How can CBD affect me when applied to the skin? Where am I supposed to put it? Will it really work? These are just a few of the questions we are commonly asked about CBD topicals and skincare. In this article, we will be talking about CBD roll on; a mysterious CBD infused product with some interesting effects.

What is CBD roll on for?

CBD roll on are usually designed to help provide relief from inflammation, pain, soreness, or muscle tension throughout the body. The product can be applied to the skin to help soothe areas of discomfort.

CBD roll on consist of a small-ish tube containing CBD extract and other nourishing ingredients. The tube is topped with a roller ball which dispenses the CBD product as you apply it onto the skin.

At Honest Hemp, our CBD roll-on contains a combination of essential oils: ylang ylang, frankincense, lavender, and chamomile. It is thought that these essential oils contain relaxing and healing properties which provides us a whole new level of indulgence! Ylang ylang oil is thought to help control skin oil production and improve skin elasticity, whilst lavender oil can help to soothe aching muscles and joints even further.

Where do I put CBD roll on?

You should apply your CBD roll-on to specific areas of your body that require attention. If you are experiencing pain, discomfort, or inflammation in an area of your skin or muscle, you should roll the product directly onto that area.

For general use, CBD roll-on’s are especially effective when we apply them to pressure or pulse points. Pressure points are specific areas of the body that may produce significant pain or other effects when we manipulate them. They are located all over the body; take a look at the diagram below to see where our pressure points are located. Pulse points are areas where you can feel your pulse, meaning they can be much easier to locate. For example, the side of the neck or the inner wrist. The blood vessels are closer to the surface of the skin in these areas, meaning the product can be more effective. This essentially means that the product is absorbed more effectively. This practice has been used for years in aromatherapy.

An additional benefit of using a CBD roll on is that the roller ball can have massaging effects. This means it can be excellent to apply directly to sore muscles to help provide some immediate relief.

Does CBD roll on really work?

The trick with using CBD products is trying to find the best way for the Cannabidiol (CBD) to get into your system and have an effect. If you are looking to use CBD for issues surrounding mood, sleep, anxiety, heart health, or other internal functions, then CBD topicals would not be best suited to your needs. You would want to opt for a CBD oil, edibles, or e-liquid in this case.

However, if you are looking to use CBD for issues surrounding pain, inflammation, muscle soreness, or skin problems, then CBD topicals would be suitable for you. Topicals can be far more effective due to the way our skin absorbs the product. CBD oils and edibles must pass through the digestive system before they can reach the bloodstream, meaning that CBD is essentially ‘lost’ through the process. This means that less of the CBD can have an effect. With CBD topicals, the product does not have to be digested or go through any of this process, meaning less of the CBD is lost.

Research suggests that CBD has strong anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. This means that it may help to reduce pain or tension caused by inflammation in the muscles and joints. CBD roll on is best suited for treating these problems. The anti oxidising properties of CBD may mean that other CBD topicals could help to relieve symptoms of skin problems, such as acne or psoriasis.

Can CBD be absorbed through the skin?

The way that CBD topicals work is by absorbing into the skin and interacting with the endocannabinoid system. This system is present throughout the whole body, and comprises endocannabinoid receptors and natural cannabinoids. These receptors are also located in the skin. It is thought that, when we use CBD, it can help to enhance the effectiveness of this system by increasing the number of cannabinoids that we have. The endocannabinoid system is responsible for regulating many bodily functions, including: pain, sleep, mood, and more. So, using CBD topicals may help the cannabinoid receptors in the skin to work more effectively, therefore improving our body’s response to pain and inflammation.

As mentioned above, when we use CBD topicals the CBD does not have to digest or find its way into the bloodstream in order to have an effect. This means that less CBD is ‘lost’, as it does not have to go through complex processes in order to reach the endocannabinoid receptors. This may increase the effectiveness of the product. It allows us to take full advantage of the CBD we are paying for.

Can I put CBD on an open wound?

Research has suggested that CBD can have strong healing properties. It suggests CBD can have sterilising effects, promote skin cell growth, and provide antibacterial protection whilst the skin repairs. These antiseptic properties could mean that CBD may work as an excellent tool for helping our wounds to heal.

However, we would not recommend applying the CBD roll on to a fresh open wound. Although it is unlikely to have any negative effects, we have not designed the product for that purpose. You may unintentionally spread bacteria via the roller ball applicator, or the other essential oils and ingredients may have unwanted effects. We do recommend using our CBD topicals on sore, damaged, or cracked skin in order to help repair it. However, for this purpose it would be better to opt for the CBD salve.
